Negutatorul Tantalos din Micene se inclina in fata regelui Xerxes si spune:

- Nebiruitule, ti-am adus ca dar de bun venit cateva gaste, ceva mai multe oi si inca si mai multi bivoli.

- Cate din fiecare ? intreaba regele.

- O descendent al zeilor. 3150…

- Ma bucur; Foarte bine, foarte bine!

- … este numarul obtinut prin inmultirea capetelor lor, o, fiu al lui Zeus.

- Asta nu-i bine. Fii mai explicit, Cate din fiecare ai adus la curtea mea?

- In total tot atatea oi, gaste si bivoli cate neveste are  Luminata ta Faţă!

- Incepi sa ma superi, Tantalos. Nu pot deduce numai din ceea imi spui. Daca secretul este asa de mare, poti preciza macar cati bivoli mi-ai adus ca ofranda?

- Mai putin de jumatate din numarul total, o, tu posesor al tunetelor ceresti!

- Aha, acuma stiu! Iau ceea ce mi-ai adus, dar tu, perfid grec, pleaca din fata ochilor mei!

Cate gaste, oi si bivoli a adus Tantalos regelui Xerxes ?

- Oh, you descendant of the gods. 3150 ...

- I'm glad; Very good, very good!

- ... is the number obtained by multiplying their heads. You, son of Zeus…

- That's not good. Be more explicit, how many of each you brought to my yard?

- The sum of the sheep, geese and buffalos equals the number of your wives!

- You're starting to upset me, Tantalos. I cannot find the exact numbers from what you tell me. If secrecy is so important, can you at least specify how many cows did you bring as an offering?

- Less than half of the total, oh you the great!

- Aha, now I know! I take what you have brought to me, but now go away!
